Bone marrow needles are used to remove samples of bone marrow tissue or fluid, or to deliver drugs or fluids into the bone. The type of needle used depends on the procedure:

• Bone marrow aspirationA needle is used to withdraw a sample of the fluid portion of bone marrow. A syringe is attached to the top of the needle to remove the sample. This procedure can be used to evaluate red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets.
• Bone marrow biopsyA special hollow needle is used to remove a small, solid piece of bone marrow. This is called a core biopsy because the needle removes a cylinder-shaped tissue sample.
